Little Neck, NY, January 31, 2017 – Former NYPD Transit Sergeant celebrates his 104th birthday. On Wednesday, January 25th, Officer Puleo of the NYPD’s 111th Precinct traveled to Brandywine Living at The Savoy to deliver a gift to a very special recipient. Louie Schlifstein celebrated his 104th birthday along with Officer Puleo and 60 of his fellow residents at Brandywine.
Louie was delighted to be surrounded by so many friends for his birthday, and wore his new NYPD hat proudly as he posed for a photo with Officer Puleo. The NYPD shared the photo on their Facebook page, asking followers to join in the celebration and wish Louie a happy birthday. The post garnered over 13,000 likes and more than 1,400 well-wishes from all over the country.
Louis “Louie” Schlifstein was born on January 25th, 1913 on the lower east side of Manhattan. He was the second of five children born to Dora and Samuel Schlifstein, immigrants from Poland and Russia. He grew up surrounded by a large family, and fondly remembers helping his grandmother sell bagels from a cart on the street corner. Eventually, his family moved to Brooklyn where he attended school through the 9th grade, after which he went to vocational school to learn the art of printing and typesetting. In 1937, he married Sylvia Lurrey and together they had two children, Richard (Zev) and Dorothea. In 1941, he joined the NYPD as a Transit Officer, and was eventually promoted to Sergeant.
Louie lived on his own until the age of 101, when he moved back to his hometown and settled at Brandywine Living at The Savoy. He has four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren who adore him. Louie enjoys singing, listening to music, dancing and eating. He attributes his longevity to not smoking or drinking, and to staying active.
