Bob Feller Act of Valor Award Presented to Brandywine Living Veterans

Melville, NY — Resident veterans of Brandywine Living at Huntington Terrace proudly donned their military caps on December 4th, 2019 for a touching tribute that honored their service in the military. This tribute was led by Peter Fertig, President and Founder of the Bob Feller Act of Valor Award Foundation, a non-profit that honors veterans and teaches youth about the legacy of service.

Bob Feller, a professional baseball player, put his career on hold, at age 23, to enlist in the military after the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941. Even though he was cleared for deferment, he served for almost four years on the USS Alabama, was honorably discharged as a Chief Petty Officer and earned six campaign ribbons and eight battle stars. He returned to his Major League Baseball career with Cleveland Indians and went on to win 266 games.

Each veteran received a pin and limited edition commemorative issue of the “Walk of Hero, Profiles of Valor” with their names proudly showcased in the book alongside veteran Hall of Fame heroes.

“It was marvelous how we honored the veterans in the highest way. I was so proud to be there and receive a book with my husband’s name included with these great baseball players. My husband lived here at Brandywine and would have been so proud to be in this wonderful tribute,” commented Theresa Manderson.

During the tribute Peter Fertig educated the community on baseball celebrities and their history of military service featured in the “Walk of Hero, Profiles of Valor”.

Vincent Martucci said, “I have been a baseball fan my whole life. It was fantastic to learn about the Hall of Fame baseball players that also served in the Armed Forces. I have always been interested in learning about actors that served in the war, but never players and it was fantastic to learn about. I was happy to be a participant and given the Bob Feller Act of Valor Award and book. Now my name is in the book, which is an honor. Thank you, I will treasure this.”

Brandywine Living is proud that many veterans call their senior living community home. Almost thirty resident veterans and surviving spouses were honored at the ceremony.

“It was an honor to be here. My husband Anthony lived here at Brandywine and would have been so proud,” said Jean Ferry.
