Brandywine Living at Haddonfield Resident Writes Play

On September 14, 2018, the stage was ready and the scene was set to a Brandywine Living at Haddonfield Resident Council Meeting. “The Revolt”, written by Walter Mondschein, a resident of Brandywine Living at Haddonfield, was inspired by the community’s monthly resident council meetings

Walter explains, “I got the idea for this play when I attended our monthly resident council meeting. I observed the gracious and polite way Jackie [Executive Director] and senior staff fielded the often-silly suggestions, which were supposed to improve things. It was sometimes difficult to keep a straight face upon hearing complaints. So I thought I could make up something jovial, something that pokes fun at it, the rest just grew and developed out of daily observation life here at Brandywine.”

The storyline of the comedic play features a Brandywine Living resident who runs for community office and tries to make many changes to daily life at Brandywine. When the Brandywine team tells the resident that the changes cannot be done, the complaints go all the way to the Supreme Court!

Brandywine Living team members and residents made up the cast and crew of this one evening production hosted at the Haddonfield Plays and Players. The opening night was carefully planned to coincide during the community’s National Assisted Living Week celebration.

“It was so heartwarming to be part of an original production. With the support of Haddonfield Plays and Players, we were able to show the community that the arts are alive and well at Brandywine Living at Haddonfield. It was great to perform in the show with my fellow residents and Brandywine staff,” commented Mitzi Goldstein, Brandywine Living at Haddonfield resident.

Although the performance was not open to the public, families and friends were invited to attend and overall feedback for the play has been very positive.

Brandywine Living team member, Maria Rysz, exclaimed, “I loved watching every minute of how much fun the cast was having while putting on the play! Especially at the end when a 97 year old man jumped out of the box cake made for the Executive Director. The day was truly amazing!”

“It created a buzz for several days amongst the staff and the residents, even their families,” said Walter.

Brandywine Living would like to thank Haddonfield Plays and Players for allowing residents to utilize their theater and looks forward to more future collaborations.

“We were thrilled when we heard that one of their residents had written a play, and since HP&P and Brandywine are both part of the community, we were very glad to host the premiere on our stage.  The show itself featured clever dialog, spirited performances and the audience was thoroughly entertained.  They were wonderful to work with and we look forward to the next show,” commented Haddonfield Plays and Players.
