On September 22, 2018, Brandywine Living at Huntington Terrace joined the American Parkinson’s Disease Association Optimism Walk hosted at the Marjorie Post Park in honor of Bill Dalton.
Judy Dalton, Bill’s wife and advocate of Parkinson’s disease awareness, led the walk and fundraising efforts that raised over $1,000 for the association.
Not only did Judy lose her husband to Parkinson’s disease, she too is diagnosed with the disease and a resident of Brandywine Living.
“I lost my husband to complications from Parkinson’s when he was 71 years old. I hope I will live to see the day there is a cure for this disease. My advice to those affected by Parkinson’s is to try to live healthy, keep the faith and keep steady,” said Judy.
Although this is her first time joining the Optimism Walk, it is not her first time advocating awareness for Parkinson’s disease. During their time at Brandywine Living, Judy and Bill helped facilitate a support group at the community with the support group orchestrator, Julie Garofalo. The support group has been running for four years at Huntington Terrace and has brought together those affected by Parkinson’s disease and their loved ones across the local community.
During her time working with the Parkinson’s disease support group, Judy also became affiliated with Rock Steady Boxing, an exercise program designed to help those diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease to maintain mobility.
Members of the community’s support group and Rock Steady Boxing joined Judy alongside the Brandywine Living team in the Optimism Walk.
Patti Finkelberg, Executive Director of Brandywine Living at Huntington Terrace exclaimed, “I was so proud to be along side Judy at the finish line! She is a true inspiration to all of us at Brandywine Living!”
Brandywine Living at Huntington Terrace located at 70 Pinelawn Road, Melville, NY, hosts a monthly Parkinson’s Disease Support Group on the second Friday of the month. For more information, please call Julie Garofalo at (631) 862-3560.
