Brandywine Living Visits Local Elementary School for National Technology Day

Brandywine Living at Toms River residents visited Silver Bay Elementary School for a special afternoon of technology in celebration of National Technology Day on Wednesday, June 5, 2019.

Fifth Grade Peer Leadership Ambassadors introduced residents to S.T.E.A.M (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) through a variety of inventions, computer devices and technologies.

Ms. Rhein, Peer Leadership Ambassador Facilitator, commented, “When we approached the students to work with Brandywine, their response was overwhelmingly positive. Our students wanted to travel to Brandywine and they wanted the residents to visit us at Silver Bay. When given the opportunity, our students rose to the challenge to become the facilitators of a technology expo and excelled in creating an engaging experience for our friends from Brandywine.”

Students started working on their projects that included robotics and “makey makey” circuits since the beginning of the school year, often skipping recess to complete.

Their hard work paid off as residents and team members of Brandywine Living were wowed by the displays. Residents had the opportunity to test out each technology and learned about the science behind it from the students.

The intergenerational program was mutually beneficial to both residents and students who participated. It provided a platform for students to proudly display their work while interacting with seniors who enjoyed their companionship.

“The creativity in our youth is endless and our residents were so appreciative and overwhelmed with joy to be around a group of really great kids with an extremely bright future! We are excited and looking forward to see what fabulous inventions they will have next,” exclaimed Tammy Palermo, Brandywine Living at Toms River Escapades Producer.

Brandywine Living and Toms River Schools have already made plans to continue their partnership through the summer months. Residents will be revisiting in July and August as part of the school district’s special Summer Peer Leadership Ambassador Program.

“We at Silver Bay are overjoyed with the achievements of our Peer Leadership Ambassadors.  We welcome any opportunity where we can partner with the community to improve the lives of our students and neighbors.  These are experiences, which will enrich lives and empower our students to become active members of our community,” said Mr. DeVita, Principal of Silver Bay Elementary.
