On May 30, 2018, America celebrated National Senior Health and Fitness Day with over 100,000 participants. Its main goal is to keep older Americans fit and healthy by highlighting local community fitness events. While encouraging an active lifestyle is always a priority for Brandywine Living at The Savoy, celebrating National Senior Health and Fitness day made it more exciting. The community planned the day’s schedule filled with mental and physical fitness programs.
The day started off with a comedy show and yoga class hosted by fitness instructor Dawn Trepeta and Robin Gensburg, family member to resident, Susan Levine, wrapped up the morning program with a meditation healing session.
Before heading into afternoon activities, residents enjoyed refreshing smoothies during health screenings provided by Brandywine Living Wellness Nurses.
Afternoon activities featured a session of invigorating Zumba, relaxing massages, and a health lecture presented by Asif Kallam, Wellness Director of Brandywine Living.
“Overall our residents and team members got fit while having fun!” said Xiomara Encarnacion, Escapades Producer of Brandywine Living at The Savoy, who planned the programming.
Active residents were asked for advice on leading a healthy lifestyle during senior years and everyone agreed that physical and mental exercise is important.
Estelle Postel commented that “Exercising every morning, not eating between meals, and doing Anagrams keeps me healthy.”
Jean Brennan agreed and added, “Getting lots of fresh air and eating fresh and healthy food is key.”
Other Brandywine Living communities who participated in National Senior Health and Fitness Day include Brandywine Living at Haverford, who welcomed their strategic partner, Main Line Health, for special fitness courses.
