Dresher, PA — Every year on June 21st, Brandywine Living at Dresher Estates hosts The Longest Day® Walk to raise funds and awareness for Alzheimer’s disease. This year marked a new tradition for the walk as three other Brandywine Living communities joined their efforts to form “Team Brandywine”.
The Longest Day® is The Alzheimer’s Association’s second largest fundraiser hosted every summer solstice. Teams across the globe spend the day honoring those who’ve been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease by participating in physical activities while raising awareness and funds.
Brandywine Living at Dresher Estates has been participating in The Longest Day® for eight years. The tradition started when Escapades Producer Rachel Kaufman learned about this new program and realized what a great opportunity it was for residents with mobility issues and busy families to attend the Walk to End Alzheimer’s hosted every fall in Philadelphia. Her goal was to create an event close to the community that allowed more attendance for the residents, staff, family and community members to give them the opportunity to show support.
The walk has since grown from a small community event to 116 participants and over 100 miles walked with plans to keep growing.
“This is the 8th year that Dresher Estates has participated in The Longest Day® and we were thrilled that our sister communities Haverford Estates, Senior Suites and Upper Providence in conjunction with our sponsors, residents, families and community joined us this year to help raise funds and awareness for The Alzheimer’s Association. Our original fundraising goal was $2000 and we ended up raising $4160. We are thrilled,” commented Rachel Kaufman, Escapades Producer of Brandywine Living at Dresher Estates.
Relay walkers began arriving at 6:30am to Monduak Commons Park, located behind Brandywine Living at Dresher Estates, to get the walk started. During the day residents, team members, family, and sponsors arrived to walk the one-mile park track at different time slots.
At least one team member was walking at all times until sunset to symbolize the constant fight against Alzheimer’s disease. Walkers and event volunteers were able to take a break by enjoying refreshments and socializing in the picnic area in the park.
“This was Upper Providence first time participating in the Longest Day event with Brandywine Living at Dresher and it will not be our last! The excitement from staff, residents, family and neighbors was contagious. It felt great to be a part of such an amazing event that supports a great cause. I am looking forward to next year,” said
Shantelle McCullough, Escapades Producer, who stayed on-site from sunrise to sunset to support walkers
